NEXT for NEIGHBORS is a first-of-its-kind program in New York offering a unique approach to ensuring a life of dignity, choice and engagement for adults with autism and those with related developmental and intellectual disabilities.
A community living model, NEXT for NEIGHBORS combines the warmth and consistency of a natural home setting with highly individualized, comprehensive professional services, delivered and overseen by live-in professional staff. These services are designed to empower and teach adults to live as independently as possible.
NEXT for NEIGHBORS is a program of The Arc Westchester, created by Community Living Opportunities (CLO) and NEXT for AUTISM.
To be eligible for NEXT for NEIGHBORS the individual must be an adult who has New York State residency and is pre-approved by New York State’s Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). NEXT for NEIGHBORS is a pilot program and is expected to open in the fall of 2019.
Program innovations include:
- Individualized, Supported Living Services Individuals live in specialized home settings located within typical communities. Professional families live with them, guiding, mentoring, and nurturing them in their daily lives. These professionals are trained and certified annually to meet the practical and emotional needs of the people they serve.
- Community Immersion NEXT for NEIGHBORS activities are individualized and designed to encourage learning through community immersion and integration. We will also work with service and community organizations such as JCCs, YMCAs and local colleges to facilitate opportunities for clients. Our belief is that people with autism should be a part of the larger community, not isolated as they often are.
