Cuomo Bridge Lights Up Orange!

On a cool and windy night along the Hudson River, The Arc Westchester marked its 75th Anniversary with another special celebration. This significant milestone was shared throughout the Hudson Valley Region as The Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge lit up in bright orange on Saturday evening, April 13th. Orange, our signature color shared with The Arc NY and The Arc US, symbolizes our steadfast commitment to supporting people with developmental disabilities and their families across Westchester County.

Family members, staff and people supported by The Arc Westchester gathered at The Hudson RiverWalk Park in Tarrytown. There, they witnessed the breathtaking sight of the illuminated bridge and came together to honor all who have contributed to our mission over the past 75 years. From humble beginnings—a $3 ad in The New York Post seeking playmates and a small group of parents meeting at the Mount Vernon Public Library—the organization has grown into the largest non-profit in the county, serving nearly 2,000 children, teens, and adults with developmental disabilities.

Since 1949, The Arc movement has championed inclusivity and empowerment for people with developmental disabilities. As we reflect on our journey during this anniversary year, we are reminded that advocacy remains integral to our success. We carry forward the spirit of our founders, advocating for the rights and aspirations of those we serve to flourish within their communities.

The orange illumination of The Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge serves as a poignant tribute to our organization’s unwavering commitment to fostering independence, inclusion, and dignity for all. We extend heartfelt appreciation to all who joined us at the water’s edge and to the New York State Thruway Authority for recognizing our dedication to enhancing the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities in our communities.
