Colorful Socks for Down Syndrome Awareness!
Every year on March 21st, the world celebrates World Down Syndrome Day a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The date for World Down Syndrome Day being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.
This year, members of our Day Services groups wore “Crazy Socks”, to help spread awareness and celebrate this important and significant day. Colorful and Socks and the #LotsOfSocks campaign has become the standard for how people celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. The socks represent how unique each person is, and they resemble chromosomes!
The Arc Westchester encourages everyone to show off their “Crazy Socks!”, to learn more about this important day, and find more ways they can celebrate and spread awareness!
