According to the CDC, children and adults with mobility limitations and intellectual or learning disabilities are at the greatest risk for obesity. Recognizing the need for nutrition education and support, The Arc Westchester has a nutritionist who has been working with our individuals living in supported apartments. She helps them recognize healthier food options, teaches them cooking skills and ways to be creative with what is on hand when making a meal or snack. While the goal is to improve health, our individuals celebrate all the little milestones – even someone trying a vegetable for the first time!
Little successes add up to enormous progress, in not only improving the health of an individual, but also raising self-esteem and broadening their outlook on food choices.
The good health and nutrition program will expand throughout the organization. Cooking is an activity, but the relationships and the empowerment of an individual is the best part.
