Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month 2026
Every March, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), together with partners across the country, celebrates Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM). This important month highlights how people with and without disabilities come together to build strong, inclusive communities where everyone belongs.
At The Arc Westchester, this message is at the heart of everything we do. We are proud to support people with developmental disabilities as they live, work, and fully participate in their communities. This month is a time to celebrate their contributions, recognize their achievements, and reaffirm our commitment to removing barriers and expanding opportunities.
NACDD’s 2026 theme, We’re Here: Then, Now, Always, is both a celebration and a call to action. It reminds us that inclusion is essential to our community. Together, we will continue advocating, educating, and working to ensure that every person has the opportunity to thrive.
Rally in the Valley
We will once again participate in the ‘Rally in the Valley’ on March 13th. A large group of staff and advocates crossed the Hudson River to Rockland Community College, where they joined forces with Jawonio and other organizations. Equipped with signs and loud voices, we will express our concerns about cuts to Medicaid and the NYS Budget.

Celebrating World Down Syndrome Awareness Day: March 21st!
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) , March 21st , is a global awareness day that has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. This World Down Syndrome Day, we’re asking everyone to come together and stand Together Against Loneliness. Let’s raise our voices, spread connection, and make sure no one faces life alone.
Raise Your Voice and Take Action!
Tell Governor Hochul to Meet our Requests for the 2026-2027 Budget. The Executive Budget only includes a 1.7% Targeted Inflationary Increase (TII) and we need the full 2.7% just to match inflation for the year, and we need support for our Careforce Affordability package! Take a minute to advocate HERE.
Women’s History Month
The Month of March is also Women’s History Month. So many women played a role in advancing rights, inclusion and dignity for people with developmental disabilities. We honor the advocates, caregivers and professionals who are commited to building a more inclusive community and expand possibilities for people of all abilities. READ ABOUT ALL OF THEM HERE!
