Celebrating The Arc Westchester’s 75th Anniversary Supporting Peoplewith Developmental Disabilities
Westchester County, N.Y. (March 18, 2024) – The Arc Westchester is thrilled to announce that The Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge will illuminate in vibrant orange on Saturday, April 13, 2024, in celebration of the organization’s 75th Anniversary. This special lighting, confirmed by The New York State Thruway Authority, represents the organizations color and symbolizes The Arc Westchester’s steadfast commitment to supporting people with developmental disabilities and their families across Westchester County.
Established in April 1949, The Arc Westchester has been at the forefront of advocating for inclusivity and empowerment for people with developmental disabilities. What began with a $3 ad in The New York Post searching for playmates and a humble gathering of parents at the Mount Vernon Public Library wanting a school, the organization has blossomed into the largest non-profit in the county, providing essential services to over 2,000 children, teens, and adults with developmental disabilities.
Reflecting on its history, The Arc Westchester continues to embody the spirit of its founders, championing the rights and aspirations of individuals with developmental disabilities to thrive in their communities. The lighting of The Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge in orange serves as a poignant tribute to The Arc Westchester’s unwavering dedication to fostering independence, inclusion, and dignity for all.
Plans are underway for a commemorative gathering on the picturesque Tarrytown riverfront at dusk on April 13th. This event will bring together esteemed dignitaries, dedicated administrators, cherished families, and beloved program participants to honor The Arc Westchester’s remarkable journey and celebrate the lives it has touched over the past 75 years. Further details about the gathering will be announced in the coming weeks.
Join us as we illuminate the night sky in a radiant display of solidarity and support for individuals with developmental disabilities. Together, let us honor the past, celebrate the present, and embrace the future of inclusion and empowerment.
